A decade or so ago in the UK there was a flurry of demutualisation amongst building societies - mutually owned, not for-profit savings companies mainly established in the 19th century to help workers buy homes. The motivation for account holders and management to favour demutualisation and listing was readily apparent: people who had held neglected accounts for years were offered shares worth thousands...
