General Atlantic offer is Nymex board favourite

In the private equity sweepstakes for part ownership of New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex), General Atlantic last week appeared to be edging out Blackstone Group and Battery Ventures for a minority share of the exchange.

General Atlantic, an $8bn venture capital firm based in Greenwich, Connecticut, which has become the largest shareholder of Chicago's Archipelago Holdings, has put in $240m bid for a 20% stake in Nymex, according to a source close to the board.
