Eurex volume in March declined 8% compared to trading volume reported a year earlier. Trading volume last month totalled 183m contracts but this failed to meet the volume set in March 2007, when volume reached199m contracts. However, despite this decline in volume, daily average volume in the first quarter equalled 9.1m contracts, which surpassed average daily volume recorded in Q1 2007, which totalled 7.3m contracts per day. This equated to a 26% rise.The strongest performing asset class during the month was once again the exchanges equity index derivatives segment. Volume totalled 84.5m contracts, slightly below the figure of March 2007 when 87.4 million contracts traded. However, futures on the Dow Jones Euro STOXX 50 reached its second-best monthly volume when 40.5m contracts traded; a figure that easily surpassed the 30.3m contracts traded in March 2007.
