US Senate anti-speculation bill stalls


The latest anti-speculation bill from Democrat senator is unlikely to pass through the Senate before the August legislative break.

The bill, called the “Stop Excessive Energy Speculation Act of 2008” has run into snags connected largely to amendments for oil drilling off the coast of the US. Reid’s bill won a procedural vote on July 22 but then lost another procedural vote on July 25.

The bill was blocked by Republicans who objected to a provision that would prevent them from adding an unlimited number of amendments to the legislation.
