Extreme volatility drives trading in US options down


US options exchanges have reported declines in trading year-on-year as historic volatility on many of the world’s equity markets drove volumes down 21.2% in November.

US clearinghouse, the Options Industry Council, which clears the US equity options trading, reported 244.88m options contracts were traded in November.

Average daily volume for the month was 12.89m contracts, down 12.9% from the 14.80m contracts traded a year earlier. The OIC said November volumes were down 35% from October, a month which saw record volatility. Year-to-date volume through November totaled 3.36bn contracts,...
